DOWN THE ASILE :: With The Gay Wedding Show this Sunday at The Delta Chelsea Hotel set to introduce same-sex couples to the vendors stepping up to help you do your I-dos right, we asked a few of the many experts out there for their best tips for a perfect day.

The Expert: Malvina Chevolleau
Expertise: Sweet Beginnings Wedding and Event Planner
The Ultimate Tip: “Plan ahead and stay organized! Don’t leave all the small details until the last minute or they will bite you in the butt. Grab your partner and get to work as early as possible on all the tasks that seem most painstaking. From figuring out where you will seat your embarrassing uncle to gluing tiny bows on your menu cards, you’ll be thankful you did it early. As well, it’s your job to look your best; your guests will expect you to bring your A game on the wedding day. That’s hard to do with no sleep and stress levels off the chart, not to mention that  puffy eyes are never flattering in photos. Plan to have all the details taken care of 3 days prior to the wedding so you can get some R&R and enjoy the pre- wedding jitters with your partner. It’s also a great idea to hire a wedding planner for the day of the wedding to coordinate all the little details, even if you have done all the planning yourself. This allows you and your families the luxury of sitting back and feeling like pampered guests at your own wedding.”

The Expert: Eddie Stone
Expertise: Newlywed
The Ultimate Tip: “Don’t worry about others, which is easier said than done. But remember: It’s your day.”

The Expert: Jeff Mandell
Expertise: Bandleader (The Bluesual Suspects)
The Ultimate Tip: “Encourage your guests to get up to dance earlier rather than later. A lot of people make the mistake of saving the music for later, but after a long day of being couped up in confined spaces (posing for pictures, sitting during the ceremony) it’s very important to get them up to dance. Rather than wait for dinner and speeches to end, have them get up during dinner between courses!  Although this is counter intuitive, the net effect will be a wedding full of energized guests who end up staying longer and partying more.

The Expert: Russell Day
Expertise: Vice President, Daniel et Daniel Catering
The Ultimate Tip: “Do your homework!  Ask friends and family who they have used to plan/cater their weddings. Choose reputable suppliers and let them guide you through the process. Listen to them—they have done this before. Stick to your theme and don’t make things too complicated and don’t try to cram too much into your day.”

The Expert: Shaun Proulx
Expertise: Newlywed (catch him hosting Sunday)
The Ultimate Tip: “I’ll offer two. First, it’s all about the photos. All you’ll have after a whirlwind day is the memories captured, so make sure it’s not just whatever gets posted on Facebook. Choose a photographer whose style grabs you immediately and don’t skimp out budget-wise. I’ve seen people spend triple on flowers what they did on the photos – which lasts forever? My other tip is to focus yourself on the Big Day into the moment the minute you get up. Notice the little things, breathe, whatever it takes to keep you staying engaged so to enjoy everything you possibly can.”

The Expert: Joan Brennan
Expertise: Elite Catering
The Ultimate Tip: “The hardest thing for wedding vendors to deal with are last minute changes. They precipitate a series of changes, all of which then have to be dealt with. And gotten right! The chances of problems are magnified if changes and decisions are made late in the process.”

Tickets are $10. Enter online or at the event to win your wedding.

Jack Layton wrote a letter to Canadians the Saturday before his death. Here it is in it’s entirety.

Dear Friends,

Tens of thousands of Canadians have written to me in recent weeks to wish me well. I want to thank each and every one of you for your thoughtful, inspiring and often beautiful notes, cards and gifts. Your spirit and love have lit up my home, my spirit, and my determination.

Unfortunately my treatment has not worked out as I hoped. So I am giving this letter to my partner Olivia to share with you in the circumstance in which I cannot continue.

I recommend that Hull-Aylmer MP Nycole Turmel continue her work as our interim leader until a permanent successor is elected.

I recommend the party hold a leadership vote as early as possible in the New Year, on approximately the same timelines as in 2003, so that our new leader has ample time to reconsolidate our team, renew our party and our program, and move forward towards the next election.

A few additional thoughts:

To other Canadians who are on journeys to defeat cancer and to live their lives, I say this: please don’t be discouraged that my own journey hasn’t gone as well as I had hoped. You must not lose your own hope. Treatments and therapies have never been better in the face of this disease. You have every reason to be optimistic, determined, and focused on the future. My only other advice is to cherish every moment with those you love at every stage of your journey, as I have done this summer.

To the members of my party: we’ve done remarkable things together in the past eight years. It has been a privilege to lead the New Democratic Party and I am most grateful for your confidence, your support, and the endless hours of volunteer commitment you have devoted to our cause. There will be those who will try to persuade you to give up our cause. But that cause is much bigger than any one leader. Answer them by recommitting with energy and determination to our work. Remember our proud history of social justice, universal health care, public pensions and making sure no one is left behind. Let’s continue to move forward. Let’s demonstrate in everything we do in the four years before us that we are ready to serve our beloved Canada as its next government.

To the members of our parliamentary caucus: I have been privileged to work with each and every one of you. Our caucus meetings were always the highlight of my week. It has been my role to ask a great deal from you. And now I am going to do so again. Canadians will be closely watching you in the months to come. Colleagues, I know you will make the tens of thousands of members of our party proud of you by demonstrating the same seamless teamwork and solidarity that has earned us the confidence of millions of Canadians in the recent election.

To my fellow Quebecers: On May 2nd, you made an historic decision. You decided that the way to replace Canada’s Conservative federal government with something better was by working together in partnership with progressive-minded Canadians across the country. You made the right decision then; it is still the right decision today; and it will be the right decision right through to the next election, when we will succeed, together. You have elected a superb team of New Democrats to Parliament. They are going to be doing remarkable things in the years to come to make this country better for us all.

To young Canadians: All my life I have worked to make things better. Hope and optimism have defined my political career, and I continue to be hopeful and optimistic about Canada. Young people have been a great source of inspiration for me. I have met and talked with so many of you about your dreams, your frustrations, and your ideas for change. More and more, you are engaging in politics because you want to change things for the better. Many of you have placed your trust in our party. As my time in political life draws to a close I want to share with you my belief in your power to change this country and this world. There are great challenges before you, from the overwhelming nature of climate change to the unfairness of an economy that excludes so many from our collective wealth, and the changes necessary to build a more inclusive and generous Canada. I believe in you. Your energy, your vision, your passion for justice are exactly what this country needs today. You need to be at the heart of our economy, our political life, and our plans for the present and the future.

And finally, to all Canadians: Canada is a great country, one of the hopes of the world. We can be a better one – a country of greater equality, justice, and opportunity. We can build a prosperous economy and a society that shares its benefits more fairly. We can look after our seniors. We can offer better futures for our children. We can do our part to save the world’s environment. We can restore our good name in the world. We can do all of these things because we finally have a party system at the national level where there are real choices; where your vote matters; where working for change can actually bring about change. In the months and years to come, New Democrats will put a compelling new alternative to you. My colleagues in our party are an impressive, committed team. Give them a careful hearing; consider the alternatives; and consider that we can be a better, fairer, more equal country by working together. Don’t let them tell you it can’t be done.

My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.

All my very best,
Jack Layton

HOLLYWOOD :: Don’t get between Tori Spelling and her McCain Thin Crust pizza. Despite her 7-month pregnancy, Mrs. Dean McDermott flew all the way from L.A. to Toronto to promote the product – and spread the word about her hit reality TV show, sTORIbook Weddings (airing now on Slice).

TheGayGuideNetwork chowed down with the Hollywood royal to discuss hoarding gays at home, the pitfalls of breast implants, and why she naturally connects with the queer community. Especially, it seems, with TheGayGuideNetwork‘s extra pepperoni-loving Nelson Branco.

TheGGN: Welcome back to Toronto!

Tori Spelling: Thank you. We were just here a month ago. Dean did some business, and me and the kids came along because Stella had never been here and Liam was here when he was really little. I wanted them to experience Toronto.

GGN: Do you consider yourself a honourary Canadian now?

TS: Can I call myself one? [Laughs]

GGN: Yes! Your latest reality TV show is sTORIbook Weddings…Are you running out of Tori-isms?

TS: I know, right?! There is so much pressure now to keep topping. I’m so glad my parents named me Tori! It began as a funny thing but now the pressure is on because people expect a Tori-ism. Luckily, when I look at what’s left with “tori,” there’s a lot left!

GGN: You’re involved with McCain Thin Crust Pizza… why?

TS: Obviously, I knew a lot about McCain from Dean because when we’re in Canada we’re always eating McCain fries, etc. Even though I’m pregnant, I still have discerning taste. What I like about it is that women in general love that it’s thin because we like to avoid as many carbs as possible.

GGN: Do you get your hands dirty in the kitchen – or is Dean the chef in the family?

TS: No, we both love to cook! Growing up, we had people working for us but we cooked. My mom is more of a great baker than anything else. My family is very specific where we cook a lot… we even have an organic garden. We’re really into eating natural, healthy ingredients and making our food ourselves.

GGN: You recently said that you regretted plastic surgery in an interview; why?

TS: I didn’t say I regretted it. I was talking about my boob job [Laughs] What I said was, “If I had known it would have given me trouble breast feeding, I would have never have done it.”

GGN: You recently starred in a Hoarders spoof on FunnyOrDie.com where your hubby stages an intervention because you hoard gays!

TS: [Laughs] Omigod…we had so much fun doing that. And it got a great reaction. I like making fun of myself… and if I were a real-life hoarder… gays would be my top possession!

GGN: Why do you connect with the gay community… and vice versa?

TS: I’m not really sure why. Maybe it’s because they’ve seen me survive my ups and downs… and struggle to create own identity in my father’s world. I think gays can relate. Also, being on a campy prime-time soap opera [Beverly Hills 90210] doesn’t hurt, either! The gay community has always been there for me… and we have a lot in common. My best friends are mostly gay. We always have fun!

GGN: What’s next?

TS: My new book is coming out: it’s my first party-planning book. My philosophy is whether you are planning an intimate party or a party for one hundred people, I take the reader through all the tips from the conception to the execution, especially if you’re on a budget.

REVIEW :: I was privileged enough to experience Britney Spears’ two-stop performance of her Femme Fatale Tour at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre this past weekend.

I know what you’re thinking: twice? In a row?

I would have thought the same thing about 48 hours ago, but please hear me out. This concert was one of the absolute best concerts I have ever seen, and I have seen plenty in my day. Spears was in top form as she went through a non-stop, almost two hour performance of a slew of her hits from the past decade and a half. She looked amazing, and had state-of-the-art technology incorporated into the set design, lighting, video screens, and stage itself. Laser-beam flashes, pyrotechnics, lifts, a movator, and flying set pieces, mixed with some unexpected celebrity appearances made the Femme Fatale concert one for the books.

From Jersey Shore fame, DJ Pauly D (Paul DelVecchio) got the crowd going (only Sunday August 14th), spinning some beats as people began to trickle in.  Teenage girls and their mothers alike were in a state of heat I’ve never experienced to that capacity. If you think that didn’t get the crowd excited, up next was Nicki Minaj, with her big, blonde wig that can be seen for days. Her high-energy, long-winded set made the crowd go nuts. She performed all of her top hits, and even brought out Toronto’s own Drake out for two songs. Immediately following her set, I was already drained and exhausted from it all. Spears hadn’t even made the stage yet.

Spears opens the night with a very visually-stunning video/light/smoke trifecta. She looks visibly healthier and happier this tour, seeming genuinely much happier to be performing again. Spears went through a vast majority of her hits, from her first album “…Baby, One More Time,” to her most recent studio album “Femme Fatale,” in a flawless sequence that left you at the edge of your seat. A storyline about The Sexy Assasin gave you something to watch while Spears was changing for the next section of the show. And she actually sang a majority of the songs live (due to a slip-up here and there). Some may argue that this is only because the Toronto shows were filmed for the tour DVD (to be released in November), and so she would have to go above and beyond her limits to impress the home viewers. More research needs to be done as to whether or not Spears does this in every show, or if she simply is much more comfortable singing live these days. Either way, Toronto captured Spears’ best live performances as of late. Spears’ dancing has also vastly improved since her last tour (The Circus Tour 2009), and it’s almost like she doesn’t stop moving the entire duration of the concert.   Although I wasn’t originally impressed with the set-list of the tour (see here), Spears amazed me with the song arrangements and interpretations. From trancy club hits, to Egyptian voguing, to R&B, to pure, fun pop – the show was a great mix of worlds. The stand-out performances on both nights were definitely “Up and Down,” “3,” “Gimme More,” “Womanizer,” and the very last song of the show, “’Till the World Ends” (where Spears is joined with Minaj).

It was definitely worth the double-viewing. Like most concerts these days, it’s hard to fully absorb the entire show in one sitting, but here are the things that you do remember from the concert that you may want to forget: Spears only recently cut Madonna’s “Burning Up” from the set-list. I was looking forward to this performance the most! Perhaps the large guitar that she rides while performing it was too large to tour with any longer, but it was disappointing to have no Madonna points of reference. Oh, wait: Spears clearly takes an entire Madonna performance from her Sticky and Sweet Tour 2008 with “How I Roll,” and basically recreates Madonna’s “Beat Goes On (featuring Kanye West and Pharrel Williams).” I guess that’s what happens when you work with Madonna’s long-time tour director/choreographer (Jamie King). There are also some filler songs on the set list that make you wonder why they were even included in the first place. “Piece of Me” and “…Baby, One More Time” were less than two minutes each, and didn’t serve any purpose in the concert whatsoever. She also cut the only ballad of the show short, “Don’t Let Me Be The Last To Know,” which doesn’t leave too much of a gap between emotions. Nonetheless, the concert was very well-done, and I applaud Spears for her endurance, stamina, stage presence, live singing voice, and spectacular concert performance.

What made the night even better was how engaging Spears was with the audience. She threw out a couple “What’s up, Toronto?” ‘s and made sure to giggle, scream, and make sure we were paying attention to how hard she was working. She was in amazing spirits, and I wish this tour nothing but the best of success. If there was a third performance of the show tonight, I’d be there, too!

Philip Tetro is our resident Madonnaologist, and sometimes remembers that there are more musicians than Madonna out there. He is also a resident panelist on MTV’s 1 girl 5 gays.

TELEVISION :: Exclusive Interviews: Eileen Davidson’s dream Y&R love interest!  Venice’s Crystal Chappell on creating a successful soap (are you listening daytime?). Plus: Robin Strasser: Diva or Professional Artist?

SOAP AND ORDER

Suds, she wrote: The Young and the Restless’ moregeous Eileen Davidson loves killing people off, which is why she’s thrilled that the fourth installment of her literary soap opera mystery series, Swinging in the Rain (available on amazon.com), starring daytime actress-turned murder sleuth (think Angela Lansbury, but sexier) Alexis Peterson is finally out.  It’s a juicy read so make sure you pick up a copy… or two.

As for Davidson’s latest steamy Y&R storyline, which has our favourite eternal – and often-times very bitchy –  heroine Ashley Abbott  covering for her daughter after Abby mowed down her sexy fiancé, Tucker, on the eve of their wedding day, I couldn’t help but ask the Emmy-nominated stunner if it wouldn’t have made more sudsy sense if Abby had tried to seduce her future step-father to prove what a lothario he is to her Mama.

“Actually, that was the original plan, I think,” says Davidson. “There was a scene hinting that was the direction, but ultimately, Tucker didn’t go for it so they went a different route.”

Too bad, because anyone with Adam Newman’s vision can see that Stephen Nichols, one of The Soap Whisperer’s favourite actors ever, flirts with Marcy Rylan like it’s going out of style (eyes off the ass, Tucker).

Her dream storyline? More Michael Muhney! “I’d love for Ashley to get revenge on Adam, and Ashley should have sex with Tucker’s son when he’s revealed! I love that idea! Depending on who he is, of course. And also, I think it’s time for Jack to use the fact he knows that Ashley is not an Abbot so the power can shift between this sibling rivalry.”

SHOW US THE MUHNEY

Actors with benefits: Speaking of Muhney, is Y&R’s best character ever, Master Adam Newman, returning to his badass ways? “In a word, yes,” Muhney enthuses. “He has to take the gloves off now. He’s the only character in Y&R history that is capable in taking down his father, the almighty Victor Newman. Don’t you think?”

Um, in a word, obvi!

The show’s best actor doesn’t understand why Adam is so vilified by fans when every Genoa City character has gotten a get-out-of-jail card for their equally heinous crimes.

“Everyone’s tired of seeing Victor win all the time; it’s time for him to lose,” Muhney sighs. “Having said that, I don’t think Adam can atone for all the hurt he’s caused, but he’s not trying to do that. He’s the only Y&R character who knows he’s screwed up.  He’s trying to be better, yet he doesn’t make excuses like everyone else in town.”

So what would Muhney prescribe? “ I would like to see more catharsis between Adam and Ashley,” the best hair model in daytime answers (does he use Viagra on his tresses or what?). “For soap standards, he’s grown past the awful things he’s done. It’s not like he brought Patty to town; who ultimately ended up killing Colleen; which ultimately led to Patty losing it; which ultimately led him to frame Adam for Skye’s death; which ultimately led Sharon to run to Hawaii; which ultimately ended up killing Skye; which ultimately put Sharon in the crosshairs of a murder conviction; which ultimately led to the Diane mess. To me, that’s just the last few minutes of Victor’s manipulations. Victor’s not as Machiavellian as Adam is because, to  be truly  Machiavellian, your plan has to be successfully carried out – and Victor’s plans always end up failing; but Adam’s plans usually on the most part succeed. With Adam, Victor never gets what he wants. Instead all Victor does is create collateral damage around the people they both love. Enough! I’m happy Adam is getting in Victor’s face. And he’s been doing that for a while now. I think Adam knows that he can play Victor’s game better than the almighty Mustache can.”

Hell, to the yes!

CHAPPELL’s STICK

The C Word: Emmy winning series Venice is gearing up for its highly anticipated third season in a few short months, but The Soap Whisperer couldn’t help but ask  the Days of our Lives superstar if demos play a key role when she’s writing her Sapphic web serial. “Um, honestly, no,” she laughs. “I wrote Venice because I wanted to write Venice. Maybe it’s my own experience with Guiding Light’s Otalia. I write for people, who I want to write for. Also, not sure if you noticed, but I’m on the older end of that demo, too! As a soap fan, and I think that’s true for most of us,  I enjoy watching veteran characters and actors. To me, soaps are about multi-generational relationships. When I look at my cast , there are no teenagers – not that I’m against that, of course — because I’m planning on bringing that youthful element to the show at some point. But clearly, I don’t have teenagers on my show. Almost 50 percent of our viewers fall into that 18-49-age range. I don’t know what means in the long run but I do know that writing for a certain demo is not going to necessarily score you rating points.”

Um, speak for yourself, Chappell-erella, I’m still 19, damn it.

As for her cult fan base, mainly composed of straight women, who admit to having relentless, punishing girl crushes on La Chappell, the two-time Emmy winner admits she gets a “kick out of that. I appreciate all these young and older women who connect with the show and our characters. It’s not about age, it’s more about being our audience being female. This is all about being filling a niche. A sponsor has approached us because we’re doing something new and different than every one else. Don’t be surprised if a Tequila company sponsors the show soon because they loved our numbers and our market: straight women, gay women, and some gay guys.”

I’m still 19, damn it!

ALL ABOUT STRASSER

Return From Witch Mountain? Soap opera’s definitive and divine diva Robin Strasser addresses rumours that she was difficult until the end of her iconic run as the original Dr. Evil, Dorian Cramer Lord on One Life To Live.

Having played the most badass bitch in daytime (sorry, Erica Kane) since 1979, the New York native tells GayGuideToronto.com exclusively:

“Rumors and skewed truths floated about my being high maintenance to crazy are possible. I am guilty of both, but worth it,” she laughs.

“A national publication was told no pictures were available of me taping my last show because I kicked the photographer off the set,” she continues. “I did indeed ask him to leave…but I have done that for the past 20 years, natch, because I simply can not concentrate on the scene if I can see or hear a photographer with a camera.

“If the inability to have photos taken while performing and trying to capture the scene in the one take we’re allowed is a defect, I am guilty of that, too. Nothing is more important than the performances the audience is going to watch. Nothing! We, loyal and passionate audiences, want expect that… always! When I clarified that with the person who’d been ‘informed of Ms. Strasser’s behavior’ they were disappointed…they loved the image of me as the furious Bette Davis throwing people off the set. Dump that diva deal ideal,” the Emmy winner quips.

Memo to all gay fans: Read AutoBLOGraphy on robinstrasser.net. “My stepfather was noted Afro-American photographer, Roy DeCarava so that’s why I know and respect the art and the artists.”

Peace out and up, Robin.

For Strasser’s first exclusive interview as to why she left One Life months early, tune into a major publication very soon for some juicy dish, Cramer-Branco style!

More hot soap sex next week, biatches!
