CLICK CLICK, FLASH FLASH

Glen Baxter may be better know as the host of CTV’s IN FASHION, and reporter for the Fashion Television Channel, but give the guy a camera and his true artistry shines.

I had the pleasure of attending a photo exhibit for the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival, Pervasive Influence.

Walking into the Hugo Boss store on tony Bloor Street, I’m met with sideways glances from pinched-faced employees.  Ignoring them, I follow the signs to the exhibit located up up and up on the third floor.  Climbing the stairs reminds me to get back on the stair master at the gym, but the climb is worth it, because the photos are raw and real.

For this exhibit, Glen Baxter travelled to Azerbaijan, a former Republic of the USSR that is affected by war, conflict and border disputes.  These are a population of people displaced from their homes, living in virtual exile and the photos reflect their struggles and their strengths.

Glen has captured the subjects in raw and real moments of their day to day lives.  The faces staring back have a story on the lips, a story of the juxtaposition of hard living amongst a fairy tale landscape.  The hard lines that crease the people’s faces betray the hope and passion in the eyes.

P.S.  Passion’s what I felt leaving the exhibit, but passion isn’t what was to be found in the eyes of the Hugo Boss employees.  What was with employees motioning to each other as I came and went from the exhibit.  Really? Secret hand gestures?.

Perhaps they were giving the “all-clear” that I in fact was not shoplifting (thanks!), but truly attending the exhibit.  All I could think was a famous line from AbFab: “You only work in a shop, you know.  You can drop the attitude.”

* The Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival continues to support RIGHT TO PLAY, a leading international humanitarian and development organization to build essential skills in children using the power of sport to transform communities affected by war, poverty and disease. A wonderful cause indeed!

iMaxFashion – Right Off The Runway – Philip Sparks

Last season during the two weeks leading up to LG Fashion Week saw the return of something completely new. More menswear. Designers for Spring 10 were banking on the men’s market exploding and everyone from David Dixon (http://www.daviddixon.com) to Evan Biddell (http://www.evanbiddell.ca) were doing some for of menswear and if you loved clothes Spring 10 is your season. But why wait until the magazines and Fashion Television choose to run shows. What if you could see them before they were on TV? Well that’s what I am doing.

This season I am launching iMAXFashion where you will see the hottest shows in Toronto from my seat through my iPhone. Thanks to Apple technology I am bound and determined to bring you the best, first. To start here are a couple of images from the Philip Sparks (http://www.philipsparks.com) show on Thursday, March 11th. His collection was inspired this season after Moby Dick. After the show I schmoozed with designer Evan Biddell, Mary Simons (one of Toronto’s top fashion PR people) and Glen Baxter of In Fashion.

DSquared Invade Canada!

Make room for the Italian invasion! DSquared duo Dean and Dan Caten will be back in Canada. However they will not be gracing Toronto with their fabulousness. The two who were born in Canada and made it big in Italy have been fixtures in the Canadian and Toronto scene since the mid-80. To give you an idea I used to party with both Dean and Dan at 80s gay bar extravaganza Komrads and attended their very first fashion show at the Diamond club right after their first appearance on Fashion Television.

Though Dean and Dan will be holding an exclusive meet and greet at Holt Renfrew’s Vancouver store signing their new limited-edition sweatshirt. You can almost be part of the action by grabbing one of their sweatshirts before they are all gone here in Toronto. The shirt features a large red maple leaf and for all you label queens has a large DSquared name which will spread across your chest. But hurry, like the designer’s visit to Canada these shirts will be around for a short time only ($350).
