KYLIE!

La La La, La La La La La

La La La, La La La La La

Ok, so we’ve all been at those concerts where you’ve come with your friends, you’ve paid the big bucks, you’re unimpressed with what is going on on stage, but you force yourself to sway back and forth, gyrate around a bit and hum along to avoid being the stick in the mud… right?  Am I alone in this? KYLIE, A CORONATION UPSET & HALLOWEEN

I know SOME of Kylie’s music.  I only enjoy SOME concerts I go to.  And I am SOMETIMES hard to impress.

But curtain down, cuz here comes Kylie Minogue!!  The key word to describe the concert, FUN!!

She’s basically a drag queen that has had a ton of money thrown at the production, and I loved every minute of it!  Even songs I didn’t know, I found myself grooving to.  And the crowd was basically everyone off of Church Street.  Take a bow girl, you deserve it!

For weeks now on PROUD FM we have been having the people in from TICOT  (The Imperial Court of Toronto) talking about the election and coronation of their newest Empress.  For those who don’t know (as I didn’t), there are courts in many many cities in Canada and the U.S..  The members of the court basically raise money for charities.  Two candidates stood before us.  One, well spoken, in full face, bearing gift bags.  The other, not in drag and still drunk from the night before.  This went on for weeks, with one candidate clearly the front runner (in my mind anyway).  Finally the elections took place and we anxiously awaited the announcing of the new empress at the coronation.  I didn’t get to go, but Mark, a well known face in the Village, did (see pic below).  The result?  An upset!  Follow the progress of TICOT as we continue to interview them on BREAKFAST IN BED with PATRICK & DEB on 103.9 PROUD FM, M-F 6-10a (www.proudfm.com)

My Burning Bathhouse

A Thanksgiving report about a bathhouse in my hometown Winnipeg appeared on the television shortly after having just hung up from speaking to my family.

The reporter explained what a bathhouse was, and that the fire has drawn attention to this enterprise, and the fact places like this exist for gay men to have sex in Winnipeg: OH THE SHOCK! And, that there are at least 15 – 16 bathhouses across the country.

I’m glad to see my hometown getting a bit of an education.

CBC’s online headline was hard to miss: Draq Queen ID’d as 1 of 2 bathhouse fire victims.

Coincidently, “The Office,” The only bathhouse of my days in the “Peg”, similarly caught on fire New Year’s Eve 1990. If I were to use the Michelin guide, it’d get a 1/2 star rating.

In those days, If you were spotted heading into The Office it would be guaranteed to be the hot topic making the rounds at one main gay bar, “The Club” (closed a year or two ago).  What I never understood was how anyone did get spotted unless the one doing the rating was also there. The sauna was located on Main Street in Winnipeg’s rough North End, nowhere close to downtown.

A QUEER LANDMARK CLOSES IT’S DOORS

Sometimes  you wanna go, where everybody knows your name (bum bum bum bum)

And they’re always glad you came (bum bum bum bum)

You wanna be where… ok, enough of that, you get the point.

Zelda’s has been a Toronto queer landmark since I can remember.  My god, what other restaurant in the city offers nachos served by a drag queen on roller skates under dozens of mirrored disco balls?  I’ll tell you… NO WHERE!!

Kitsh, trailer, showy, tacky, gawdy and over the top don’t begin to describe the atmosphere.

It’s also home to Drag Idol, a yearly drag competition that draws big crowds, big hair and big dreams.

Imagine my surprise, when at 5:30 in the morning and on my way to PROUD FM, I see the Zelda’s sign being dismantled.  What??  Why not remove one of my legs while you’re at it!!  (ok, it wasn’t that disturbing, but it was a shock!)

ZELDAS

Up went the notice… and the start of a new chapter for Zelda’s!  See you at the new location!!
