BEATS :: Thank God It’s Funny

I rarely gush over a music video. Unless of course, the video is one of Christina Aguilera’s, then I’m a life size gusher. But that changed when I watched “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”, Kitty Purry’s (Katy Perry’s) brand new music video.

I went into it with low expectations. The video was practically everywhere before it was anywhere. Viral campaigns filled my Facebook and Twitter feeds and even my brother’s favourite website “Funny Or Die” was plastered with Katy’s brace faced teenage alter ego Kathy Beth Terry.

I officially fell in love with this video at the 1 minute 12 second mark when Kathy Beth discovers racy photos of herself online from the night before, causing a muted yelp of terror. And then at 7:18 when Kathy Beth evokes the type of excitement that could only be caused by something big

It’s a colourful and funny 8 minute escape to the 80’s with trippy time travels to the 90’s (thanks to a Hanson cameo) and then present day (YouTube’s Rebecca Black and some dudes from Glee). This song could have been accompanied by your typical party music video but instead was contrasted with an 8 minute comedy skit.

What I’ve always liked about Perry is her childlike approach to her music. The hair, the costumes, the lyrics, the music videos all exude a care-free vibe. She doesn’t take herself too seriously and that care-free attitude translates extremely well onto the computer screen.

The perfect equation: pop music + humor = an unforgettable music video.

MAN OF THE HOUR – PHIL VILLENEUVE

A sporadic dancer who surprises subway riders is our Man of the Hour! Read his TMI Questionnaire below…

JUST THE FACTS

I’m a Taurus.

I’m 29.

I was born: May 3, 1981

I DJ three parties in Toronto, write the Fab Tunes Column and sing in a couple choirs. I’m also the Social Media guru at Puretracks.com.

My fave colour: Green

Passion: Music, singing like Aretha Franklin

Fantasy entourage: The Supremes

Turn-ons: Good shoes/boots, sense of humour, some facial hair

Irresistible in a mate: no drama

Phrase I most overuse: “FUN!” I say and use fun way too much to describe and react to everything.

Most people would be surprised to know I: grew up on an island with my family where my dad was a park ranger.

Fictional best friend: François Sagat

Talent I wish I had: I really wish I was a very good swimmer and could remember people’s names better.

When I order a cocktail I ask for: Vodka Soda with a small mountain of lime.

GUILTY PLEASURES

TV: Coronation Street

Song: pretty much any Glee song.

Greatest extravagance: a god damn house! It’s small but it’s hilarious and fun. (there I am using fun again).

WEAR APPARENT

Jeans: APC

Footwear: Common Projects

Watch: I don’t like to know what time it is most of the time.

Eyewear: I’m blind and I love my tortoiseshell Oliver People’s/Paul Smith collab glasses.

Casual: Some Uniclo pants with like 80% stretch and my fave sweatshirt that I’ve had since grade 9.

Formal: some Wings & Horns dress pants (they are the best!), a KIN dress shirt from Sydney’s and Black Rokin dress shoes. Lastly some tight Calvin Klein undies, dressing up is no fun if you’re wearing old underwear.

Perfume / Cologne: Oyédo by Diptyque

BEAUTY DUTY

Shampoo: I don’t really wash my hair

Face wash: Kiehl’s Facial Fuel

Moisturizer: I’ve got greasy skin so I don’t usually moisturize

Indulgence: I love buying crazy soaps for the shower, like giant honking bricks of creamy something or other …

GOTTA GETTA GADGET

On my music player now: the new Jennifer Hudson album

I always PVR: The Nature Of Things on CBC

CULTURE VULTURE

Last book read:  The Lost City of Z by David Grann

Last movie seen: Carlos

Last concert: Janet Jackson (!!!)

Last play: I haven’t seen one in ages, but I really WANTED to see Kaleb Robertson’s The Me Show.

OBSESSIONS

Current obsession: Colourful socks. I love them. I want more of them.

Past obsession: Quebec Disco. There was so much amazing shit to dig up. I think I finally have a good grasp of that amazingly odd era.

Future obsession: Wearing as little clothing as possible this summer while actually wearing clothing. i.e. lots of mesh and other items with holes in them?

CRYSTAL BALL

The next big thing will be: Christina’s comeback. It must happen.

AND FINALLY …

Words of wisdom: Information is not knowledge. Knowledge is not wisdom. Wisdom is not truth. Truth is not beauty. Beauty is not love. Love is not music. Music is THE BEST. – Frank Zappa

CHER BY NUMBERS – THE 00s

Political landscapes change. The pop culture pendulum swings back and forth. Trends weave to and fro. Divas come and go. But a legend lives forever.

By the turn of the new millennium, Cher had cemented her status as an entertainment legend. She had done just about everything an entertainer could do: music, movies, television, touring, Broadway, producing and directing.
And she wasn’t done yet. Read the full story

The 25 Days of Christina – Day 14

The 25 Days of Christina – Day 14

You’ll learn to begin to trust the voice within.

On December 23, 2003, Christina Aguilera released The Voice Within, her fifth and final single off Stripped. I was so happy when I watched this music video for the first time because beautiful and inspiring ballads are best matched with simple music videos to emphasize the magic of the lyrics. David LaChapelle’s black and white creation was shot in one take and acted as the garnish, instead of the main course.

I love when I listen to a song and imagine the story in my mind. With this video I was able to keep my personal visual storyboard while enjoying a unique yet subtle visual that only enhanced my own preconception.

The Voice Within is a universal message of believing in yourself and power of your inner guidance system.

This is a perfect example of why Christina’s ballads change lives.

The 25 Days of Christina – Day 13

The 25 Days of Christina – Day 13

I was at an open house for a performing arts high school in the fall of 2002 with both my parents. As Mom and Dad took their time in each classroom I was impatiently checking the time.

“We have to go now.” I hissed after an attempt was made to see the school’s gym (Me? Phys Ed? Really?). I had seen enough.

We piled in the car and headed home as I yelled “Christina Aguilera’s MTV Diary is about to start!” Thankfully we arrived in the nick of time and I sat cross legged directly in front of the television set as the hour long documentary special began.

Without a shred of bias (well maybe a little) this special is the best insight into a celebrity’s life I have ever seen. A camera crew followed Xtina through her Stripped album booklet photo shoot, her rehearsals and performance for the Pussycat Dolls lounge, her dollar store Halloween decoration shopping spree, a revisit to her childhood home, her recording sessions with Alicia Keys, ping pong with Linda Perry, home cooking with her mom and sister, the walk in closet shenanigans with her brother, the home made haunted house (starring Christina the witch) and loads of other juicy private moments which were showcased during the 60 minute rollercoaster!

These days, shows like these are the norm. Celebrities reveal every little detail via Twitter and documentaries come with albums on iTunes as an incentive to buy. What was special about MTV Diary was the exclusive invite into your idol’s world. We were in their cabs, we were at their dinner table, we were in the front row of their show. For a young kid, that’s all I had ever wanted. I wanted to be a part of that creative energy and see how the songs were created and what happened at rehearsals.

It’s been almost ten years ago since that show aired and as much as I love following, tweeting and Facbooking with my favourite artists and celebrities, a part of me wants that mystery back. Christina Aguilera has always been a private person therefore leaving a sense of mystique in her wake. She doesn’t tweet, she doesn’t have a reality show, she doesn’t have an autobiography and she isn’t daily fodder for the tabloids. This diary was the closest her fans have ever gotten to her (and probably ever will). She puts her heart and soul into her music which is why her fans have such a connection with her and why she doesn’t feel the need to put her life on display. This was the icing on the cake for her loyal fans but a fabulous wake-up call to all the skeptics and haters who had never understood her transition into her own truth.

Enjoy the entire MTV Diary: Dirrty Blonde below!
