I’m getting married this year. And so braving a snowstorm to check out The Wedding Show seemed like the right thing to do:

“You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have the facts of life, the facts of life!”

According to the theme song of the highly popular TV sitcom from the 80′s, the ‘facts of life’ mean taking the good AND the bad.

But what is the ‘good’ exactly?  The good things are easy to spot.  Good things make you feel happy.  So, what is the ‘bad’?

Bad things are easy to spot as well. Bad things make you feel like shit. But the funny thing about bad things is that it only takes a shift of perception before the bad thing opens up to a new understanding and reveals a new foothold to some place really really good.  I dare say gooder then any good thing could be.

I know what you’re thinking, Eddie has finally lost it.  He has accidentally consumed too much lube over the years. A person can only be pounded so much before there is eventual brain damage. But hear me out.

So, you’re going through life.  Oops here comes something bad.  Looking at this bad thing makes me sad and angry and depressed.   Obviously this ‘bad’ thing is NOT something I want in my life.  Hmmm, then what DO I want?  And as you sit there and ponder the OPPOSITE of the bad thing that is in front of your face, you distract yourself from it; and guess what, it goes away!

Horray!!  Now, not only is the ‘bad’ thing gone, but you are strongly focused on something really great!  And that’s better than good isn’t it?

“You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both…” Yes, please, I’ll have more of ALL of it!!

This past weekend, Shaun, Cricket and I headed to Yorkville for ‘Holiday Magic’ and the lighting of the Yorkville Xmas lights (ok, really we went to see the ultra talented cool Canadian chick, Ivana Santilli perform live).

It was worth braving the cold weather for (especially for Shaun who had a song dedicated to him… I was so jealous!)

If you would have told me that I would get to spend a night with porn star Cole Streets, drinking, getting hit on by Swedish men and befriending an intoxicated waitress reminiscent of a Jennifer Coolidge character, I woulda said you were nuts.

Pride Toronto E.D., Tracey Sandilands, Eddie Stone & veteran judge, Ivory

Ask me to judge something and I’ll be there.  What could be more fun than judging others right?  Wrong!  I have a new found respect for the judges on shows like American Idol and Dancing With The Stars.  It’s a tough job.  The balance between positive and negative feedback (or should I say construction criticism).

Rolling out another batch of talented queer artists this year, is QUEER IDOL 2011, at Goodhandy’s.  With a plethora of talent and an endless supply of judges why not head down and cheer on your favourite contestant!

The 10 month long competition looks to find the best of the best, and I’m sure I saw it live last night.  Do yourself a favour and head down to Goodhandy’s for QUEER IDOL, who knows, you may get inspired to audition next year!

The inspired mobilization following the string of recent suicides due to bullying has been overwhelming. But there is a side to these stories that we have not completely addressed.

I remember growing up gay. I knew I was different than the other kids, but I was one of the lucky ones. Lucky because I knew from a very young age that there wasn’t anything ‘wrong’ with me. I knew that the other kids would not understand my being gay, and that was o.k.. I told myself I would wait. Wait until my peer group was old enough to handle the news when I did eventually come out of the closet. Since I kept my sexuality to myself, didn’t really stand out in a ‘gay’ way and even experimented with girlfriends, I was never on the recieving end of very much bullying.

But I’ve known bullies, and I’ve seen bullies, and I know now it works.

I’ve been on the receiving end of the word ‘fag’. And I know what it feels like to be a target.

Let me explain it in another way. Whenever somebody says something hateful or does something harmful to myself or someone I know, instead of seeking revenge or plotting to get back at them, I simply remind myself that the torturer is living in their very own version of hell. All bullies are either depressed, wounded, broken, misaligned, misguided, misinformed or all of the above and so so much more. There is no need to go after them because they carry around so much more darkness then you could ever lay upon them yourself.

Now, let’s take that analogy and apply it to the bullies of gay kids. These are broken individuals who are drowning in their own ignorance and seeking desperately for approval from others. Life for them is hell. And so they make life hell for others.

So, I agree: It gets better. But this is also a message that applies not only to those being bullied, but to the bullies themselves. It gets better… for everyone!

If Madonna, Shaun Proulx and myself went out to lunch, I would be the only person sitting at the table that has never had an OxyBeauty facial treatment.  That just doesn’t seem fair.  Why should the two of them had soft, dewy, wrinkle free skin, while I sit there with sandpaper skin?  Why should their skin be infused with oxygen which provides a boosted immune system and healthier brain activity, while my blackheads take centre stage?

Enough was enough. Even though no lunch is planned, I put my foot down and made an appointment to get my very own OxyBeauty treatment in Yorkville.  As I would find out, there are many many luxurious steps to being beautiful.

Let’s be honest, there has never been anything close to the perfect leader.  It is impossible because there are so many different people with so many different points of view and with so many different agendas. The perfect leader does not exist.  The closest we ever come is having someone represent the majority of the people’s interests.  Well, isn’t that what an election is supposed to do?  Aren’t the people supposed to get out and vote and the majority’s voice should be heard?

On Monday, Toronto spoke.  It was not the result I personally wanted, nor the result anyone I know wanted, but the majority has made up it’s mind.  We could sit and complain that the voter turn out was only 52%, or how our new mayor’s vision for Toronto will effectively wipe it clean of life.  We could go on and on about how bad things will be, how it’s all down hill from here, how we are headed into dark times.  But honestly, how the fuck will any of that complaining and whining and negative thinking help at all?

If you are whining and negative talking, STOP IT!  Nothing has even happened yet.  Let’s face each situation as they come.  He is not an all powerful voice from atop a magical mountain where whatever laws he decrees automatically materializes.  He is not the beginning and the end of decision making.  We still have a voice.  There are still people at city hall with our best interests at heart.  This is still our Toronto.

Stop sulking, pick yourselves up and face this man head on.  He does not have the power to destroy things for us… only we do!

Smitherman & Trudeau

I can count on one hand the times in my life that I have felt the urge to mobilize and get involved in a political situation.  The first happened when I was living in L.A..  Bush was running against Gore.  The lines were deeply drawn in the sand and each person represented a very different ideology.  The weeks and days leading up to the vote were tense and the entire nation was glued to the news stations watching as they two raced to the finish line.  Then, four years later, when Bush ran against Kerry a similar fascination occurred.  Only this time, when the tallies were counted, everyone rolled their eyes and braced for the worst.
