2010 was a boring year for Madonna fans – the most we got out of it were a few good photo-shoots, and some never-before-heard leaked demo songs from the past ten years. No new album, no new music videos. The only thing that was released was the Sticky and Sweet Tour on DVD/Blu-ray/CD combo, which doesn’t even do the concert justice, anyway (see post below for more of my insight on the Sticky and Sweet Tour). Does anyone even remember or care that she opened a gym…in Mexico City?

The first time I saw Madonna live was during the Sticky and Sweet Tour, October 18th, 2008. It was a Saturday night, and I had a rehearsal for my school play that afternoon. I was walking on eggshells. I don’t even remember what the play was about, what we rehearsed that day, and what how I got to and from the concert. My first memory is of me and mom in line at the merchandise stand. The line-up was huge, and the intensity of my excitement kept building with every inch closer I got to the t-shirts, badges, sweaters, bags, and Madonna key chains that lay before me: I was in Madonna memorabilia central.

Madonna has been such an integral part of my coming out process. I remember when I told my brother: we were in our basement watching T.V., when I suddenly turn to him and ask, “Did you always know I was gay?” His response: “Dad took us to Blockbuster once. I got Ninja Turtles and you got The Girlie Show: Live Down Under.” When I asked my sister the same thing, she turned and said “You vogue in all the mirrors in the house, and harmonize Madonna ballads while we’re trying to sleep.” When I came out to my mother, the Ray of Light album was playing in the background…literally. I remember being so mad that she turned off “Frozen” in the middle of a peaceful car ride. The rest, I guess, is history.

There have been several of Madonna songs that I have known since their existence, but never fully understood until I became a young adult. One song that I’ve always liked, but never necessarily connected with is “Frozen.”

People often ask me what it is about Madonna that I love so much, and each time I respond, it’s with a different answer. Sometimes, I’m really emotional and lethargic about it: “she, like me, has always felt different and ostracized. She’s overcome hardship with strength, dignity, confidence, and a better sense of self-awareness.” Sometimes, I take an artistic point of view: “her music, looks, tours, and videos cover such a vast array of different genres, types, and influences that paved the way for artists of the following generations who would not be here today without her.” And, sometimes, I’m an asshole: “she’s got nice tits.”

So, I use the term “biggest” in two contexts. Sue me.
My name is Philip Tetro, and I reign from Mississauga, Ontario – twenty minutes west of Toronto. I do not remember a day in my life without Madonna. She has literally been there for me every single day since I was born. I used to sit at home with my mother’s Madonna cassettes for hours and hours and memorize each lyric, breath, beat, synth, and detail in every Madonna song.

Ron White and Irene Poole in Ken Gass’s world premiere of Bethune Imagined at Factory Theatre, Nov. 13 – Dec. 12, 2010. Photo by Ed Gass-Donnelly.
GGTheatre – Ryan Farrell reviews Bethune Imagined on now at Factory Theatre: Norman Bethune is a very interesting character. By 1936, he was a specialist in thoracic surgery, an inventor and modifier of over a dozen surgical tools, an author of over a dozen articles and an accomplished painter. When the European Bohemian movement began at the end of the 19th Century and slowly made its way over to North America, Bethune championed it, welcoming free love and multiple sexual partners, despite the fact that his lifestyle leaned more towards the comfortable aristocracy that any self-respecting Bohemian would have condemned. An early proponent of socialized medicine, Bethune formed the Montreal Group for the Security of People’s Health. In 1935, when he travelled to the Soviet Union to observe their system of health care, he became a committed communist and joined the Communist Party of Canada. Not convinced communism was the answer to the world’s problems, he refused when offered the leadership of the Communist Party of Canada. But when the Spanish Civil War began, he was ready to commit to his communist yearnings. Yes, Bethune is a very interesting character. Sadly, what we see of Norman Bethune in Bethune Imagined, written and directed by Ken Gass, currently playing at the Factory Theatre, is that he was a philandering, womanizing, selfish drunk. The whole thing plays like an episode of Cheers as Sam and Diane go at it while wearing period costumes from the 1930’s.

Yesterday I got together with Matt Sims to chat about his party happening at The Barn tonight (Saturday, November 13, 2010)! The conversation went a little of course when I felt the need to clear the air about an “incident” that occurred during Halloween weekend’s ThereGoesTheNeighborhood.
